Scarborough’s Makers Are Getting the Support They Deserve

We've been supporting businesses on the Yorkshire Coast for four decades, and we've watched something remarkable unfold over the past few years. Whilst traditional industries continue to anchor our economy, a vibrant ecosystem of makers and micro-manufacturers has been quietly building momentum. Artisan producers, innovative engineers, craft businesses, and small-scale manufacturers are creating exceptional products right here in Scarborough and Filey. The challenge? Many of these enterprises are working in isolation, without the networks, resources, or infrastructure to reach their full potential.

That's exactly why we've launched a feasibility study to assess the potential of a dedicated Maker & Micro Manufacturing cluster for our coastal communities. This isn't about reinventing what already works. It's about connecting talented people, amplifying their voices, and creating the conditions for sustainable growth.

Why This Matters Now

The economic landscape is shifting. Consumers are increasingly drawn to locally made, high-quality products with authentic stories behind them. Digital platforms have opened global marketplaces to small producers. Advanced manufacturing technologies are becoming more accessible to micro-businesses. Yet despite these opportunities, many makers face significant barriers: limited access to affordable workspace, fragmented support services, and disconnected supply chains.

Our CEO, Jenn Crowther, put it perfectly: "This initiative is about championing the exceptional talent embedded in our coastal communities. Scarborough and its neighbouring areas are home to a remarkable concentration of innovative makers and niche manufacturers. Our goal is to unite these enterprises, providing the visibility, tailored support, and robust infrastructure required to fuel their growth and amplify their impact regionally and beyond."

This feasibility study is a Mayoral Combined Authority priority, and we're leading the charge because we understand what local businesses need. We've spent 40 years on the ground, working directly with entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey.

What We're Actually Studying

Marcus Thrall, our study consultant, is evaluating exactly how a dedicated cluster can accelerate economic growth. The research will examine critical business requirements across several key areas: talent development, flexible workspace solutions, technological innovation, manufacturing capacity, supply chain integration, investment needs, and connections to strategic programmes like the York & North Yorkshire Growth Hub.

This isn't theoretical work. We're talking to real businesses about real challenges. What skills gaps are preventing growth? What equipment or space would unlock new opportunities? How can we strengthen relationships between makers, suppliers, and customers? Where do investment needs sit, and how can we bridge those gaps?

The vision is straightforward: create a connected, future-focused cluster that enables Scarborough's makers and micro-manufacturers to scale confidently, collaborate meaningfully, and build a resilient coastal economy.

Getting Involved Matters

Here's the important bit. We need your voice in this process. Whether you're a solo craft business working from your garage, a food producer with ambitions to expand, a start-up engineering firm, or a growing micro-factory, your perspective matters. The cluster will only work if it's shaped by the people it's designed to serve.

Throughout the winter, we're hosting networking events, surveys, and industry dialogues. We're planning exciting opportunities like the "Made on the Coast" mini conference, quarterly maker clinics, and digital workshops specifically for small manufacturers. We're also exploring the feasibility of a dedicated innovation and manufacturing hub that could bring makers, creatives, and micro-manufacturers together under one roof.

These aren't token consultations. We genuinely want to understand what would make the biggest difference to your business. What support do you wish existed? What connections would accelerate your growth? What barriers are currently holding you back?

Why We're the Right Organisation to Lead This

We've built our reputation on practical guidance rather than theoretical approaches. Our qualified business advisors bring over 100 years of combined experience working with businesses nationwide. We understand fundamental business principles because we've helped thousands of entrepreneurs navigate them.

When we work with clients, we start with the foundations: identifying your purpose beyond profit, clearly defining your target market, and understanding how to make money whilst delivering genuine value. We emphasise market research because we've seen how direct engagement with potential customers reshapes business approaches in powerful ways.

This feasibility study applies exactly the same philosophy. We're not imposing a top-down solution. We're listening, researching, and building something grounded in the real needs of coastal businesses. We facilitate connections because we know that peer networks and collaborator relationships often make the difference between struggling alone and thriving together.

The Opportunity Ahead

Scarborough has always been home to talented, resourceful people. Our coastal communities have weathered economic changes before, and we've consistently found ways to adapt and grow. This moment presents a genuine opportunity to build something that could define the next chapter of our local economy.

Imagine a thriving cluster where makers share knowledge, access specialist equipment, collaborate on larger projects, and present a unified presence to national and international markets. Picture regular events where you can troubleshoot challenges with peers who genuinely understand your industry. Envision tailored support programmes that address the specific needs of micro-manufacturers rather than generic business advice.

That's what we're working towards. But we can only get there with your participation.
