Meet the Team
I have worked supporting businesses for the majority of my career, its what I love to do. Coming from a large family, all self-employed from owning hotels, property businesses to window cleaning sole traders, I have been surrounded in the world of business my whole life. The last 10 years I have been heavily involved in our family Bridalwear business, running a local retail shop certainly has its challenges, but this has really supported the work I do for Yorkshire in Business - Scarborough's only Enterprise support agency. I pride myself in 'been there and done that', understanding what you are facing and you're not alone. This is why I love to support you and your business.
I am dedicated and passionate about making sure our support is available to all businesses on the Yorkshire Coast and this is why I have been appointed Head of Operations at Yorkshire in Business. I have successfully tendered for and sourced government funding of over 3 million in the last 5 years, all of which has been used in Scarborough and its surrounding areas to support well over 500 people look to develop, start & grow their businesses, and an additional 500 unemployed move closer to the labour market.
I am passionate about helping people grow their potential, both professional and personal, which is why, as a Self-Employment Adviser at Yorkshire in Business, when you work with me we will spend time exploring your dreams and strengths as well as your practical needs before we start planning your business and accessing finances. Over the years I have helped hundreds of people develop business plans and become self-employed. I have helped web designers, cheese producers, garden rescuers, decorators, pest controllers, men with a van or even a horse box, drone pilots, restaurateurs and café owners, healers, dancing teachers, crafter artisans and artists, driving instructors… The list goes on.
Sometimes the hardest part is believing in yourself. If necessary, we can work together to develop your confidence and motivation. I offer a strong set of soft skills - those personal qualities and attitudes that help us understand and get on with other people (As well as my work at Yorkshire in Business I am also a practicing counsellor, coach and clinical supervisor) - as well as the hard professional and technical skills and knowledge you would expect. With extensive experience of working in private, public and third sector organisations as well as in self-employment I am able to help you find solutions to your particular challenges and goals and if I am not the person you need to talk to I can generally point you in the direction of someone who is.
I look forward to working with you!
My name is Peter Mitchell and I am very much the curious type. Throughout my career, starting on the shop floor of the retail pioneer Our Price Records and rising to senior operations management in some of the UK’s biggest retail, wholesale and manufacturing names (Waterstones, Marks & Spencer, Tetrapak, W H Smith group, Virgin), I have always followed my nose and explored every opportunity serendipity threw at me!
A free thinking lover of the arts, music, theatre, literature, pop memorabilia and anything vaguely challenging and new, I ran my own strategic management consultancy business for 14 years assisting many businesses (from small single person enterprises up to large conglomerate organisations). I get a great buzz from seeing people overcoming doubt, difficulty and obstacles and finding success, satisfaction and peace of mind in their exploits.
I am very keen to strip enterprise and entrepreneurship back to its fundamental basics, avoiding jargon and complicated ‘business speak’. I will work hard at showing you what it can be like to set and achieve realistic but ambitious goals and targets, helping you to start and run a small business doing something that you love and are passionate about.
Nosey and inquisitive by nature, I want to hear all about your idea(s), helping you to examine things from every angle to ensure your proposition is as watertight as possible. This is very important if you are wanting to attract and recruit investors, partners or supporters.
I will be your critical friend! Hugely supportive and telling it as it is or how it might be; Even if your idea doesn’t look so promising as it did when you first started exploring it! Honesty and tenacity is key in what I do.
I joined YIB in March 2017 as an employee but knew the team from the support I received in 2015 when I started my own business as a bookkeeper. I had felt at home here from my first visit so jumped at the chance of joining the team. My role is varied working with all Virgin Start Up Loan applicants across the Yorkshire Coast whilst also hosting or running Business Advice drop-in sessions.
