Local Enterprise Agencies: Community Investment That Works
We've been part of Yorkshire's business fabric since 1985, and we're incredibly proud to be one of only 26 remaining Local Enterprise Agencies (LEAs) in the UK. At Yorkshire in Business, we represent something special - a heritage of community-focused business support that's becoming increasingly rare, yet more vital than ever.
Our status as a government-recognised enterprise agency on the BEIS approved list means something significant for businesses considering community investment. When you support our work, you're not just making a donation - you're making a tax-efficient investment in your local community that creates measurable, lasting change.
What Makes Local Enterprise Agencies Different
Local Enterprise Agencies like ourselves aren't just business support organisations - we're community catalysts. We bridge the gap between aspiration and achievement, providing the scaffolding that helps people build rewarding futures. Our approach is fundamentally different from commercial alternatives because we're driven by social impact, not profit margins.
We're quality assured members of the National Enterprise Network, which means we maintain national standards whilst remaining deeply rooted in local communities. This combination of professional excellence and community connection is what makes LEAs so effective at creating lasting change.
The Community Investment Case
When larger businesses look at community investment opportunities, they often struggle to find partners who can demonstrate real, measurable impact. We can. Our latest social impact report shows exactly why investing in Local Enterprise Agencies creates exceptional value for money.
For every £1 invested in our work, we return £12.26 in social value. This isn't theoretical - it's measured, verified impact that transforms lives and strengthens communities. Last year alone, we supported over 400 people into new careers, helped launch more than 170 new businesses, and created over 190 jobs.
Our total social value exceeded £6.5 million, with wellbeing value alone reaching over £5 million. These figures represent real people achieving real success, often after facing significant obstacles.
Real Stories, Real Impact
Chris B's journey exemplifies what we do best. As a poet and author who overcame challenges with neurodiversity, Chris found in us the support he needed to become published. We didn't just provide business advice - we offered understanding, patience, and tailored support that recognised his unique strengths.
John Westgarth's transition from teaching to self-employed photography shows how we support career changes at any life stage. Through our programmes, including test trading opportunities at Explore Indie, John built the confidence and skills needed to launch Wandering Photography successfully.
Caroline Smith's story resonates with many who face unexpected life changes. When injury ended her previous career, she turned to us for support. We helped her launch Handmade by Caz, building both online presence and market stall success. Her business now thrives because we provided practical support when she needed it most.
Supporting Diverse Communities
Our work spans all ages and backgrounds. Through our Exploring Opportunities programme, we engaged 68 participants last year - 31 young people aged 16-34 and 37 individuals aged 50+. This age diversity reflects our belief that entrepreneurial potential exists at every life stage.
We're particularly proud of our work with people facing health challenges, career transitions, and economic disadvantage. Our holistic approach means we don't just focus on business mechanics - we support mental health, build confidence, and address the whole person.
Julie Gorman's transformation from nurse to owner of Priory+ Support Services & More illustrates this perfectly. Through our Freedom Providers programme, she launched her mobile care business in Bridlington, creating employment whilst addressing community care needs.
The Ripple Effect
What makes community investment in LEAs so powerful is the ripple effect. Every business we help launch creates jobs. Every person we support into self-employment becomes a taxpayer rather than a benefit recipient. Every success story inspires others to pursue their dreams.
Our Rise2Thrive programme demonstrates this beautifully. We supported 50+ participants into self-employment whilst providing mental and physical health support to 45+ people. Additionally, 65+ participants improved their skills for work or enterprise. The programme, delivered by Emma, Jenny, and Cameron, shows how integrated support creates multiple benefits simultaneously.
Why Community Investment Matters Now
The current economic climate makes community-focused business support more crucial than ever. People are seeking alternative career paths, exploring entrepreneurship, and looking for ways to build resilience. We provide the expert guidance, practical support, and emotional encouragement that turns uncertainty into opportunity.
Our Anglo programme supported 85+ businesses with over 1,160 hours of guidance last year, averaging 13 hours per business. This intensive, personalised support - delivered by Jenn, Joanne, and Ian - is what separates us from generic business advice services.
We work closely with North Yorkshire Growth Hub, Start-up Loan Company, Job Centres, and Reed Partnership to ensure comprehensive support. These partnerships mean we can address complex challenges that single organisations couldn't tackle alone.
The Investment Opportunity
For businesses considering community investment, we offer something unique: measurable social impact, tax efficiency, and direct community benefit. Your investment doesn't disappear into administrative overhead - it goes directly to supporting people who need it most.
Most of our support services are free at the point of service, made possible by community investment and grant funding. This accessibility ensures we reach people who might otherwise never access business support.
We're transparent about our work, publishing detailed impact reports that show exactly how investment translates into community benefit. Our 2024/25 figures speak for themselves: over 400 people supported into new careers, more than 190 jobs created, and over 170 new businesses launched.
Looking Forward
As one of only 26 remaining LEAs in the UK, we represent something precious - a direct line between business success and community wellbeing. We're not just preserving this heritage; we're building on it, adapting our services to meet evolving needs whilst maintaining our core commitment to accessible, high-quality support.
Our vision remains clear: to empower, reward, and uplift individuals to embrace change and succeed. We're dedicated to training, education, raising skills, and boosting aspirations across communities. Every day, we work to ensure all community members have the opportunity to explore and reach their potential.
The choice for businesses is simple: invest in community programmes that create real, measurable change, or watch potential go unrealised. We invite you to join us in building stronger, more resilient communities where everyone has the chance to succeed.
Your investment in Yorkshire in Business isn't just tax-efficient - it's community-changing. Together, we can ensure that entrepreneurial dreams become business realities, that career changes become success stories, and that obstacles become stepping stones to achievement.
